Arthritis is a common, but frequently misunderstood disease. Arthritis is basically inflammation that has occurred in one or more of your joints. The inflammation causes swelling and stiffness in your joints which leads to pain. There are several types of arthritis, but the two most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, both of which can benefit from chiropractic care. At ChiroWorks Pain & Injury Treatment Center, our Lexington chiropractors can help you manage your arthrtis pain.

Osteoarthritis and Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is an excellent way to manage and relieve the pain caused by osteoarthritis. Routine chiropractic care will provide you with a non-invasive, safe and non-addictive alternative to prescription pain medications and painful surgery. Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that is caused by the breakdown and loss of the cartilage in one or more of your joints.  When the cartilage breaks down it eventually leads to bone rubbing on bone. It can be caused by heredity, aging and/or injury from disease or trauma. Osteoarthritis often affects the spine, hands, feet and weight bearing joints, such as your knees and hips. Symptoms of osteoarthritis generally include:

  • Pain in the affected joint, especially after repetitive use
  • Joint stiffness
  • Swollen joints
  • Decrease/loss of range of motion
  • Creaking of the joints

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, severe inflammatory disorder that often affects more than just your joints. The disease may also damage other areas of the body, including eyes, lungs, skin and the heart and blood vessels. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body tissues. Unlike osteoarthritis that is caused by wear and tear, rheumatoid arthritis affects the joint lining, which eventually results in bone loss and deformed joints. The signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may vary in severity; however, common symptoms include:

  • Joint stiffness that is typically worse in the mornings or after periods of inactivity
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Warm, tender and swollen joints
  • Rheumatoid arthritis generally affects the smaller joints first, especially the joints connecting fingers to hands and toes to feet. As the disease progresses, the symptoms usually spread to the knees, wrists, elbows, hips, and ankles.

How Does Chiropractic Work For Arthritis?

Although there is no cure for arthritis, chiropractic work for arthritis can produce excellent benefits. Some of the health benefits of chiropractic care for arthritis include reduced pain, decreased inflammation, improved flexibility, increased activity and an improvement in range of motion.  One of the most common chiropractic treatments for arthritis includes spinal alignments, which help to reduce inflammation and improve the function of your nervous system and the affected joints.  By improving the nervous system and increasing your range of motion, your body will have the ability to better manage your symptoms of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
